Malting news UK: Malt usage drops in 2020 but 2021/22 may become a normal beer/whisky/malt year

UK’s malt usage dropped from 1.55 mln tonnes in 2019 to 1.4 mln tonnes in 2020, H. M. Gauger GmbH reported earlier in June.

Usage shares were: distilling 720, brewing 430, export 160 thousand tonnes.

In May the hospitality sector was allowed to open up completely, while foreign travel is still restricted. Initial figures of beer sales and malt call-offs are encouraging; the UK may return to a normal beer/whisky/malt year in 2021/22, the Gauger analysts said.
